Southend League under way

This week saw Lentern take over top spot in Division 1 thanks to a 6 – 3 home win over the previous leaders Rawreth Megazone C. It was an unfortunate slip by the visitors, as they were only able to field two players and so fall to second place. Veteran John Tendler was again POM for Lentern. Ian Cranstone and Wayne Farmer completed their team. For Rawreth, Gary Hartgrove won two and Colin Clements one.

Stanford A are now in joint second place. They handed out an 8 -1 hiding to visiting Hockley C. POM Peter Weatherall and Derrick Pearson both had an unbeaten evening, whilst Dave Hancock had one slip-up, losing to Hockley’s Brian Bissenden.

Invicta A slipped down the table courtesy of a heavy 7 – 2 defeat away to Brand Identity B. Adam Jackman excelled to take the POM award with a maximum, with Jenny Harrison and Barrie Delf adding two wins each. Steve Marr got both Invicta’s wins. There is a school of thought that says the banana cake and gingerbread with apple, kindly provided by the home side during a tea break, may be Brand’s most effect weapon yet!

Rawreth Megazone D recorded an excellent 7 – 2 away win at RESSC. Mike Hayes was undefeated and colleagues Jake Nelson and Charlie Kauders Boothby recorded two wins each. Bob Skews played a skipper’s innings for the home side, taking both their victories.

After the first six rubbers of the match between Hadleigh Forum B and Mapledene, it looked like a runaway victory for Mapledene – they were winning 5 – 1. However, Forum rallied and took all the remaining ties to go down by the narrowest of margins, 5 – 4. No single player was unbeaten. There were two wins each for Mapledene’s Mike Johnston and Andy Seaman, and for Forum’s Paul Fawell. Forum’s Mick Tappenden and Tony Jacks won one each as did Anthon Ranjit-Singh on his return to his former club.

Canvey A’s Ray Wilson turned in a POM performance in his side’s 6 – 3 home win over Hadleigh Forum C. Ray was assisted with two wins from Peter Cray, and one from Lee McGonagle. Two of Forum’s wins came from Satwant Gill and the other from Mark Everard.

After just four weeks there is a huge 24 point gap between top of the table Basildon A in Division 2 and bottom of the table Basildon B. Basildon A, Matchpoint A and Wakering are all unbeaten whilst Basildon B, Rawreth Megazone E and Hockley D are yet to record their first win.

Basildon A took advantage of the fact that rivals Matchpoint were without a game and demolished their clubmates in the B team 8-1 to take over at the top. It was fairly straight forward for the A team of Arun Joy, Szymon Jarka and Stephen Walters, the only downside being Jenne Seibolt’s defeat of Stephen to prevent the whitewash.

Matchpoint B failed to close the gap on the leaders as they fell to a narrow 5-4 home defeat to Stanford B despite a Player of the Match performance by young Alex Deacon. The first five games were closely contested with three games going the distance, the other two games going to four sets and it left Stanford 3-2 ahead. The remaining games were shared two apiece Rob Salvage and Chris Crooks recording braces and John Handscombe providing the other point. Ben Murray got Matchpoint’s fourth.

Wakering stay in fourth place after a 6-3 win against Hockley D. Callum Turner completed a perfect hat trick, not dropping a set, and he was supported by a brace from Zac England and one from Paul England. Only three matches went beyond three sets and all those involved Paul who lost in four to Ben Cook and Tony Molisso but beat Paul Strutt in five despite surrendering a two set lead. Hockley’s other point came from a slightly surprising straight sets win for Paul Strutt against Zac.

It must have been a late night at Rawreth Megazone as their match featured four five set matches and a further two four set matches. Runnymede stormed the first four started by Andrew Humphris five set defeat of Richard Kidd and eventually ran out 6-3 winners. Andrew completed his hat trick and was supported by Tina Hutchinson with two wins and one for Anne Adlington. Richard got two wins for Rawreth and there was one for Amar Al-Soufi.

Canvey B recorded their first win of the season edging out Invicta B 5-4 despite a hat trick for Invicta’s Barbara Chabior. The Islanders quickly recorded a winning 5-2 lead before losing the last two games. Two wins each for Kevin Walsingham and Des Duffield and a single for Tony Westwell did the damage for Canvey whilst Sarah Ball got Invicta’s other point.

Team of the Week – Canvey B

Player of the Week – Callum Turner

In Division 3 a good team performance from Hockley E saw them edge a close match against Stanford C. Two wins each for John George and Gary Beck plus one for Hannah Harbour ensured a 5-4 win for their side. For Stanford there were two wins apiece for Randy Santiago and Player of the Match Mark Farley, but a blank night for Karen Kempster on her debut.

Trevor Hayes maintained his unbeaten start to the season in this division with a maximum as Canvey beat Rawreth Megazone F. Teammates John Saunders and Peter Parker chipped in with a win each and the result was a 5-4 win. For Rawreth there were two, hard earned five set wins for Ethan Nunn and a brace for Jan Thorpe.

After three successive 9-0 victories Matchpoint C came down to earth with a bump when they took on an experienced Stanford D side. Hat tricks from Andrew Jessop and Player of the Match Vaughan Chambers plus two wins for Peter Moxham meant a comfortable 8-1 success for the away side. Matchpoint’s only success came from Max Mayo’s win against Peter.

With a 9-0 win over Evolve, Invicta C have taken over at the top of the table. The experience of Trish Winter, Jon Gould and Keith Baxter proved too much for the young Evolve side who are finding it tough going at the moment but will surely improve as the season unfolds. Keith took the Player of the Match award as he continued his 100% unbeaten record.

Teenage talent wins the day

Ruby Gallagher and Lucy Carvell were the stars of the show for
Brotherhood F in their side’s 8-2 win this week against Nomads
Ocelots in Division Three of the Clacton League, the two
talented fourteen-year-olds displaying a deal of determination
along with their undoubted talent, and both recording fine hat-
tricks.
In a tight match, Brotherhood won four of the five matches which
went the distance, Carvell defeating Hazel Blanche in five and
getting past Arthur Wells-Garrett 11-6 in the decider, while
Gallagher defeated Wells-Garrett 11-7 in the decider in the final
match of the evening.
However, the closest encounter, as is often the case, was the
doubles, where Carvell, partnered with JJ Barry, edged past
Wells-Garrett and Blanche 11-4, 11-8, 14-16, 11-13, 13-11.
Wells-Garrett and Blanche picked up a point each for the Ocelots.
Another promising young player, Dan Grindrod, was Brotherhood
G’s unbeaten hero in his side’s drawn match with Windsor
Magpies. Gary Simpson and Dan Still took one each. There were a
couple apiece for Windsor’s Dave Sweetland and Alan Rutledge,
the pair sharing a crucial doubles, beating Grindrod and Still 9-11,
11-7, 8-11, 13-11, 11-9.
Relegated Windsor Harriers’ first match at this level saw them
emerge with an 8-2 win over Nomads Leopards. But the score-
line concealed a much closer match, the Harriers scraping past in
all four matches which went the distance. Isabel Barton beat Stu
Wilson 11-6 in the decider and Bob Jillins 11-9 in the decider,
whilst Ferdy Rodriguez, who also won twice, had another tight
tussle against Jillins before winning 14-12, 10-12, 11-5, 13-15,
11-7. Dominic Joannou took the two Leopards’ points.
A strong Brotherhood E side, Duncan Dunne, Fred Gallone and
Tricia Salter, proved too good for a Walton E side who were

forced to use a guest player, winning 10-0. But Walton came
close to snatching a point, Gallone and Salter taking a close
doubles 12-10 in the fifth against Lynette Sparks and Adrian
Sexton.
The all-Nomads clash between the Bobcats and the Lynx ended in
a 6-4 win for the Bobcats. Mike Vilka returned to League action
with a treble, Alex Baldock took two and Jack Riddleston one.
Lynx captain Dave Wright won two while Gerry Widnell picked up
a debut League win with an 11-8, 6-11, 12-10, 13-15, 13-11
success against Riddleston.
Brotherhood A got their Division One season under way with a
9-1 win against Windsor Buzzards, Kevin Gowlett and Russell
Hillier taking trebles and John Cleasby a couple. Dave Martin
ensured there was no Buzzards’ whitewash by exacting victory
over Cleasby in the last match of the evening, a hard-fought 11-9
in the fifth.
Nomads Lions chalked up their second win of the season, and
Adam Cuthbert his second hat-trick, as they defeated Walton 7-3

Jason Lloyd’s two for the Lions included a last gasp 11-9 in the
fifth win over Colin Dearman, while Adam Wilkin won one and
shared an 11-4 in the decider doubles victory with Cuthbert over
Dearman and Derek Willis. Former Mens champion David Binns,
making only his fifth appearance in the last eight seasons, took
two for Walton.
In Division Two Andy Foster recorded a hat-trick as Walton D,
last season’s runners-up, defeated Nomads Jaguars 6-4. Tigers’
captain Chris Petrou and Kevin Hogg, in his first Clacton League
match for almost twenty years, both won two for the losers. The
crucial match proved to be the first of the evening, Foster edging
out Petrou 11-8 in the decider.
Walton followed this with an 8-2 success against Windsor
Kestrels, Foster again unbeaten, with Paul Woolnough and Mo
Hardy winning two each. Foster and Hardy took a close doubles
11-9 in the fifth against Allen Denyer and Peter Aumord. Graham
Bunce was the Kestrels’ points-scorer.
Brotherhood D continued their promising start with a 7-3 victory
over Nomads Tigers, Simon Smith-Daye, James Smith-Daye and
Kevin Pryor all winning two. But none of them could get the
better of Tigers’ new signing Denes Somodi who recorded an
impressive treble.

Finally, promoted Windsor Penguins showed they’ll be no
pushover at this level, sharing the spoils with Lawford. Neil
Chegwidden remained unbeaten and Scott Campbell won two,
Campbell denied his hat-trick by John Colvin who took their
individual encounter 11-6 in the fifth. Colvin won two for Lawford,
with Ian Sherwood and Charlie Denholm winning one each.

Brotherhood D set out their stall

BROTHERHOOD D SET OUT THEIR STALL

There was no doubt about the result of the week as the 2023/24 Clacton League season got under way, Brotherhood D putting down an early marker for Division Two honours with a shock 9-1 win over pre-season favourites Brotherhood B.

Thirteen-year-old Joe Plummer won his three, as did Simon Smith-Daye on his return to League table tennis, with Sam Plummer winning two – an impressive team performance from the new-look ‘D’ side against established players Mark Salter, Paul Alden and Barry Allen.

The ‘B’ team’s sole success was Alden’s 11-5 in the decider win over Sam Plummer, while Alden took Smith-Daye close before losing 11-8 in the decider.

Elsewhere, Brotherhood C beat Windsor Penguins, Mark Boyland winning three, Mark Beckham two, John Gallagher one, with Boyland and Gallagher combining to take the doubles. For the Penguins, Scott Campbell won two on his table tennis return and Neil Chegwidden one, Sharon Gowlett just failing to get on the score-sheet after going down 11-8 in the decider to Beckham.

Despite three of the matches going the distance, Lawford ran out comfortable 9-1 victors against Windsor Kestrels. John Colvin and Ian Sherwood stayed unbeaten, but Charlie Denholm was denied his maximum by Kestrels skipper Graham Bunce.

In Division Three Walton E and Brotherhood F enjoyed a good scrap but experience eventually got the better of youth, Walton edging it 6-4, Lynette Sparks unbeaten. There were a couple for Maggie Earle, although it was a tight 11-9 in the fifth against Tom Bryden and an even tighter 12-10 in the fifth against JJ Barry. Joe Sherwin won two for Brotherhood.

Experience got the better of youth once again in the all-Brotherhood clash between the ‘E’ and ‘G’ teams, Brotherhood E winning 8-2, with Tony Edmonds and Fred Gallone taking trebles. Dan Grindrod and Danny Still picked up a point each for the losers.

Dominic Joannou began his season with a maximum for Nomads Leopards in his side’s 8-2 success against Nomads Lynx. There were two each for Stu Wilkinson and Chris Wilmotte, with Dave Wright picking up the two points for the Lynx.

It was also 8-2 in another all-Nomads’ clash, the Ocelots defeating a Bobcats’ side fielding a guest, with Arthur Wells-Garrett emerging as the only unbeaten player on the night. Bobcats’ new signing Jack Riddleston enjoyed an 11-8 in the decider debut win over Hazel Blanche, but went down in three to James Horsler, whilst Alex Baldock, another player making his League debut, beat Horsler but went down to Blanche.

In Division One, defending champions Nomads Panthers got off to a winning start, James Denyer unbeaten in the 8-2 success against Walton C. John Hatley and reserve Denes Somodi took two each. Mark Ratcliffe, with a good win over John Hatley, and Jason Gale took the Walton points.

An all-Windsor battle saw the Hawks take the honours against the Eagles, winning 8-2. Daniel Young won three in his first match for his new team, with Andy Vincent and Felipe Rodriguez each winning twice. Mel Rampton and John Pattrick were the Eagles’ point-scorers, Pattrick recording a close 11-8 in the decider win against Vincent to deny the Hawks’ player his treble.

Three for Adam Cuthbert, two for Adam Wilkin and one for Jason Lloyd was enough to give Nomads Lions an opening 6-4 win against Walton B, the crucial match proving Wilkin’s 11-5 in the fifth win against Graham Buxton. Gavin Price won two for Walton, John Marshall one, with Marshall and Buxton winning a close doubles 11-9 in the decider against Cuthbert and Wilkin.

But it was a baptism of fire for newly-promoted Windsor Buzzards in their first match at this level, the wily old hands of Walton A proving too good, Kevin James, Colin Dearman and Derek Willis all recording trebles in the 10-0 victory.

Marauding Mapledene take top spot

Mapledene A have taken the Burnham & District Table Tennis League by storm these last few weeks setting out a stall that has installed them as title favourites at all the local bookmakers.  This week was their best yet as they blew away the opposition from Stow Maries with a comprehensive 10-0 turnover.  Not overly surprising though given the trio of Reece Seddon, George Reeves and Babul Mcleod.  Woodham A racked up an impressive 6-4 victory over Cold Norton A to maintain their unbeaten season so far.  Fielding new signing Chris Penrose certainly helped the cause as he recorded a very straightforward debut hat-trick and then combined with captain Dan Piglet for a tight doubles point.  These 4 Penrose points and Piglets brace of wins was enough to get the revitalised Woodham A over the winning line.  Not so much luck for the Woodham B side who travelled to Champions Fambridge with a depleted side following a very late withdrawal.  Fambridge were just far too strong and won all 7 matches to add to the forfeited singles for a comprehensive 10-0 win that helps them on their march towards a championship showdown.  The evening started ok for Woodham as David Penrose took Paul Sayer to deuce in the opening leg of the first match – but that was about as good as it got for the Woodham duo.  Hard-hitting Gurj Bhambra was the evening’s player of the match on countback – but well deserved for his all-round attacking masterclass.   Mapledene B were surprisingly held to a draw against Cold Norton C.  Simon Jacob took all his singles for Mapledene, whereas his wingmen Colin Chatfield and Keith Willett couldn’t quite display the form of last season as they could only chip in with a single win each.  Perhaps Jacob should have been allowed to play in the doubles as his non-selection seems to have been an expensive oversight as the Cold Norton pairing of Kim Shead and Arron Chadler won that one very comprehensively to effectively secure the draw.  Shead was the best of the Cold Norton boys with two excellent wins over Willett and Chatfield.

Maldon B’s ascent to the pinnacle of Division 2 was thwarted this week by their very own C team as the teams played out a tight 5-5 draw where half the matches went to 5 sets.  This one went to the very last games in which the C team’s talisman Steve Aspland beat Ciaran Whelan in 4 sets to take a 5-4 lead going into the final match.  In the ‘Battle of the Colins’’, the B team’s Colin Napper took a decisive 2-0 lead against the C team’s Colin Barrell.  But fortune favours the brave and Barrell came out fighting for the next two legs to even up the match and silence the B team’s travelling supporters.  In what should have been a tense deciding leg Napper rolled over the Barrell for a quick 11-2 leg and squared the overall match.  Aspland’s victory gave him his second hat-trick on the bounce as he plays his way back to last season’s incredible form.  This stumble allowed the rejuvenated Woodham C to take the hot seat as they overcame the challenge of Maldon D to record an 8-2 victory.  The returnees were out in force as both Graham Briggs and Chris Hancox laid down relatively unchallenged hat-tricks to set up the win.  For Maldon both Chris Ravenhill and Shirley Carroll came away with the prized scalp of Adi Kamma for their two points.  Cold Norton D were looking to bounce back from last week’s whitewash defeat but it looks like the memo only reached Dave Hancox – perhaps he forgot to pass it on – as Dave racked up all 4 of his teams points on the night with the help of Terry Hylands in the doubles.  Stow Maries C relied on teamwork for their 6-4 victory as each of their players was able to record 2 singles wins with only the bubbly Rod Maclennan getting close to hard-hitting Hancox as he took their match to a deciding 5th leg.  In the final Division 2 match of the week Woodham D scored a surprise win over podium hopefuls Blackwater A.  New recruit Mal Henstock provided a debut hat-trick to help lead the team to a Dusty Bin 3-2-1 victory, with Gus Heath winning 2, and Alex Wilson chipping in with a fine singles triumph over the very tricky Merv Perriman.

St Lawrence kept up their charge for the Division 3 title with a tight 6-4 win over nearest rivals Woodham E.  St Lawrence’s Steve King maintained his fine form to see his team over the line with his third hat-trick of the season.  King’s unbeaten run leaves him the only player in Division 3 on a 100% win rate.   For Woodham E it was the sartorially elegant Chris Crooks that caused most problems with 2 good singles wins, and there was a welcome return to competitive sport for the Dark Horse that is Mitch Davies.  Davies got off to a flying start but faltered at the second match and then tailed off towards the end of the evening as the pace got too much for him.  Blackwater D showed great bouncebackability after a crushing opening week defeat.  Teamwork was the key as their trio of Jacqui Treacy, Chris Rolison and David Smith all won 2 singles apiece, and Rolison and Treacy combined for the doubles for a 7-3 triumph in the match versus Maldon E.

Essex Assessment Trials

We had a record turnout of 77 players in this year’s assessment trials. The event went smoothly, bar an unplanned fire alarm on Sunday afternoon, with all the players excellently behaved throughout. We had a videographer, Shang Mohammad, who livestreamed some of the action via Facebook and Martyn Green interviewed some of the players and coaches at the event.

Cadet Boys
On the following pages of this report, we show the tables and final ranking from each event. In the cadet boys’ event, we enjoyed a standout performance from Woodford Wells 12-year-old, Dhruv Datta, who hadn’t been on the selector’s radar until he won the final top group. Mossford’s Bogdan Voznii, owner of a particularly impressive backhand attack, also played well to come a very close second on countback. Third and fourth place were also very close with Krzysztof Szemro just passing 4th placed Christian Tishkin, again on countback. Louis Green had done ever so well to beat his initial group’s seed, Samuel Knights, over five sets and then win against notable CTTC players Luka Ha and Gil Martins in the filtering bracket to reach the top group. Louis took a game or two against all his opponents in the top group and some of his matches were very close. At only 12 years old, Louis is a player we will be keeping our eye on as he still has two years to play for Essex.

In the second group, 11-year-old Charlie Ware impressed. He won all his matches against older boys and came 6th in the event overall. On his way to group 2, Charlie took a game from overall winner, Dhruv and won against the groups highly thought-of seed, Joe Plummer. Joe was severely unlucky actually – he had the unseeded Dhruv and Charlie in his initial group and only just lost to Dhruv 9-11 in the fifth game of their match. Shalen Auckloo came second and Gil Martins third in group 2.

Chelmsford’s Luka Ha didn’t lose a game in group 3. He had done very well to beat second seed Sami Osman in his initial group, but Louis Green knocked him out in the first round of his filtering bracket. Harrison Warner of Woodford Wells came second, Kuzey Musabek third, and Noah Middleton 4th. Kuzey and Noah only decided their match after the 5th set ended 11-7 to Kuzey. Harrison Warner is only 10 years old and his high place in the final ranking, 13th, won him the U11 boys’ trophy.

One of Coach Lee McHugh’s up and coming boys, Sami Osman, found himself in group 4 and won all his matches, but he didn’t have everything his own way. Aryan Pradeep, also of Chelmsford, pushed him to five games as did Teddy Kent of Evolve TTA. Evolve TTA Coaches Kieran Skeggs and Mel Jones attended both days of the trials and were able to give encouragement and advice to their players. As well as Teddy, they also kept a close eye on Archie Wakerly, Benjamin Berwick, and Leo Goodey on Saturday and Hannah Siddalls, Aaron Price, and Jake Nelson on the Sunday. We think we will see a lot of talent emerging from Evolve TTA in the coming years. Joe Plummer didn’t lose a single game in group 5 and his opponents took less than 50 points from him in all their games combined. We note he has another year as a cadet and hope to see him at next year’s trials. His great performance in the lower half of the event means the selectors are keeping him in close consideration. 10-year-old Vivaan Babbar from Paul Sturton’s Buttsbury Club was in this group and came third. We have seen an awful lot of improvement in Vivaan over the last year and have high hopes for his future. Vivaan won the U11 boys’ trophy.

In group 6, only Tom Verrier could take a set from Ruben Rampat Maunder who won this group with a degree of calmness and an effective attack. Ruben was unlucky not to do even better, he lost in 5 close games to the impressive Ishaan Sethi in the second round of the filtering group. Thomas Yau came last in the group but battled hard, taking Tom and Oli to 5 sets. Billy Andrews came second in the group losing only to Ruben. Tom deserved his third place as he only needed three sets to win against his rival Oli Goodman. Oli had had a very tough first group with Louis Green and Samuel Knights both playing so well. In groups 7 and 8, Toby Smith of Woodford Wells and Benjamin Berwick of Evolve TTA were respective winners. Archie Wakerly earned himself a final ranking of 35th after battling through two five-setters.

Junior Boys
On Sunday morning, all the boys arrived on time and got ready to exit their initial groups in pole position. As trial organisers, Martyn and I try to avoid initial groups where only the winner of each group gets through to the top group but in this case, it couldn’t be avoided. The top seeds would need to play well straight from the off to stand a chance of a good ranking. We had two talented cadets, Callum Heath, and Harrison Hill, in the junior event and so we had
promised that their performance in the junior event would be considered when selecting teams. After the draw, we felt there were two “groups of death”, in group E, Tollgate’s Tom Hinds was seeded but had been drawn with rapidly improving Chelmsford players Luka Ha and Omar Wasi. In group H, Felix Reeve was seeded but as this was the last group, proficient cadet Callum Heath from BATTS had been ‘snaked’ into the group rather than drawn. Felix would have his work cut out!

All the other groups went with their seed and Toby McLewin, Aidan Lees, Joshua Bickles, Harrison Hill, Nikita Tkachuk and Jamie Elliot went to group 1 to play for the highest rankings. In group E, Tom Hinds won his first two games against Omar Wasi 11-7 and 14-12 but then Omar Wasi turned the tables and won the next three 11-8, 11-7 and 11-9 to reach the first group and leave Tom in group 2. In group H, Felix, and Callum both defeated Evolve TTA’s Aaron Price and had to play each other for the privilege of joining the other top juniors. Chelmsford’s Felix played brilliantly to nullify Callum’s formidable attacks and won in just 3 games, 11-8, 11-9 and 11-7. In group 1 we were treated to some truly excellent table tennis. Toby McLewin is an accomplished 18-year-old that has played in the strong Colchester premier division for Tollgate TTC since 2019 giving him a wealth of experience. Josh Bickles quite possibly has the most natural talent of any Essex junior and has been picked for Essex squads for the past two years. Chelmsford’s Harrison Hill is only 12 years old but goes to play in tournaments across the country most weekends. Nikita, also from Chelmsford TTC has started playing in division 1 of the Chelmsford league this year after terrorising division 2 last year. Aidan Lees has devoted himself to improvement and trains with the likes of England #1 U16 Ralph Pattison at BATTS. Jamie Elliot of Buttsbury TTC, Felix Reeve and Omar Wasi have recently joined the ranks of Essex’s best players and any of them can beat anyone in this event.

We started off with Jamie Elliott doing just that – beating Harrison Hill in just 3 games. That was a shock result and spectators wondered whether Jamie might be having a breakout tournament. Then, Nikita Tkachuk managed to beat top seed Toby McLewin – it seemed expected results were going out the window and no-one could predict the eventual ranking. Jamie continued his great start by beating Chelmsford star player, Josh Bickles. Harrison Hill made a quick comeback to beat Aidan Lees. Felix could offer no defence against Toby who looked to have upped his game. Josh frustrated Aidan in just 3 sets with quick blocks to dispatch Aidan’s powerful spins. Toby continued his recovery to beat Harrison in 3 games. Omar Wasi stopped Jamie in his tracks over 5 sets. Josh took Toby to five sets, but Toby kept his cool to eventually win. Harrison managed to win against Nikita in 5 games. Aidan got the better of Jamie allowing him a miserly 14 points in their 3 games. Josh needed all five sets to win against Nikita. The match was so close that Josh scored only three more points than Nikita’s total of 50. Toby was next to take advantage of the waning of Jamie, losing only 16 points in his three-set victory. A couple of matches later, Nikita only allowed Jamie 15 points. Aidan’s form continued to escalate as he achieved a win against Toby, even winning his last two games 11-3, 11-3. Felix played well against Jamie, but Jamie just took the match in a close five-setter (12-14, 11-7, 4-11, 13-11, 11-9). Aidan defeated the rampant Nikita in just three easily won games. In the last match of the group, Harrison and Josh battled it out for second place. It was a close game and Harrison just won by winning the last two games 11-8, 11-8.

Cadet Girls
We were very pleased to see 10 entrants in the cadet girls’ event. Each county championship team must have at least three boys and two girls, so the number of Essex teams we can field are only limited by the number of girls we have available to select. This year, we entered an extra cadet team into the championships and having so many cadet girls playing in this year’s assessment trials gives us hope that next year we might be able to enter a third cadet team – so cadet girls, please keep training hard!

As we had 10 girls and Woodford Wells’ Maisha Patel was ranked higher than the other girls and as she had just finished playing in the Junior Girls event, we decided to put her straight through to a top group while the other cadet girls played in three groups of three players, the winner of each joining Maisha in a final group of four while the second and third players playing in their own groups of three.

Adhuna Das and Grace Liu both play their table tennis for Rowhedge and are lucky enough to receive coaching from county luminaries Rik James and John Andrews. They are getting very good indeed and both won their groups. In the third group, 10-year-old Hannah Siddalls who had travelled all the way to Chelmsford from Southend on a bus won first place and joined Maisha, Adhuna, and Grace. Rayne’s Anmee Chan, and Ruby Gallagher and Lucy Carvell from Clacton formed the second group and Buttsbury’s Freya Hart, who had only just been beaten by Ruby, Melis Chang from the Chelmsford County High School, and Anmee’s sister, Angie Chan made up the third group. Freya played well to calmly win against Melis and Angie to win group 3. Teammates Ruby and Lucy battled it out in an exciting five-set match to decide who would win group 2. Eventually Ruby won the group and ended up ranked 5th in the cadet girl rankings. In the top group, the three 11-year-olds all won against 10-year-old Hannah who had the consolation of lifting the cadet girls U11 trophy! All the games in group 1 were decided quickly in just three sets. Maisha won all her matches, but Grace pushed her hard, scoring 10, 11 and 8 points in her games. Second place would come down to who would win between the Rowhedge friends and training partners, Grace, and Adhuna. It was close and Grace just won, 12-10, 13-11 and 11-6.

Junior Girls

Woodford Well’s Maisha Patel played in both the cadet girls and the junior girls events and impressed in both. Joining her in the junior event was Chelmsford’s top girl, already with experience of playing for Essex, Alesha Ellis-Austin. Ellianna Burridge from Rowhedge also played for Essex last season and was expected to do well. Francesca Hart from Buttsbury has accelerated her development recently and she and her sister, Freya regularly attend Buttsbury coaching sessions. Emily Davison is from Mossford TTC, and no doubt will soon pick up a backhand as sharp as Bogdan Voznii’s from her coach Josh Dye. Lucy Elliot – sister of Jamie – shows a lot of promise. The six girls were ranged against one another in a single group.

Maisha started by winning against Emily in three games. Next, Francesca greatly impressed by achieving an unexpected victory against Essex regular Ellianna. Alesha played her first game against Lucy who had few answers to Alesha’s hard smashes. Francesca was brought down to earth by Maisha in a quick three games. Lucy did well against Ellianna but couldn’t quite keep up in any of their three games. Maisha lost her first game against Lucy but came back in the next three games to take the win. Ellianna pushed Alesha hard, but Alesha unleashed her fearsome attacks and managed to overcome her opponent’s defence over four games. Emily won a game against Francesca and scored plenty of points but, ultimately, Francesca managed to win their match. Neither Alesha nor Maisha had lost a match by the time they played, and Alesha was visibly impressed by her young opponent’s abilities. The games were very close, but Alesha took them 11-8, 12-10, 11-8. Francesca played her second five-setter of the day against teammate and friend, Lucy Elliot and was happy to win out in the end. Ellianna played Maisha in the final game in the group and pulled out all the stops to win 11-9, 11-5 and 13-11. This meant Alesha Ellis-Austin won the junior girls with five wins out of five while Maisha, Ellianna and Francesca went to countback having each won 3 sets. As Elliana had won 5 sets and lost only 3, Maisha had won 3 and lost 3 and Francesca had won 3 and lost 5, Ellianna came second, Maisha third and Francesca fourth, despite all her hard work! The close result was noted by selectors and U17 Girls Winners trophies were awarded to both Ellianna and Francesca.

We would like to thank Gary Copsey for supplying some excellent trophies for the winners and cadet boy runners-up. Gordon Gatheral for giving up his weekend to help us set up the hall, take it down again and for running the hall during the weekend. Thanks to Rik James, Helen Woolnough, Martin Edwards, Christine Edwards, Paul Davison, Kieran Skeggs, Mel Jones, and Paul Nicol for coming to support their players. It was great to see Essex’s coaches in attendance. Thanks especially to Kieran Skeggs, the Essex coach that coaches our premier division teams and who was kind enough to present the trophies. Finally, thanks to Nisha Babbar for doing the registration on the Saturday.

On the following pages you will find the final Essex Assessment Trial rankings, our ideas for the 2023/24 Essex junior and cadet teams, and the event tables. We reserved the right to pick the premier division teams based on our knowledge not only of the players that attended the trials but also players that were unable to attend. This is because the premier divisions are of a very high standard, and we need to consider all of our most competent players. We have decided to almost unreservedly pick players that attended the trials for the teams in other divisions. In this way we hope to show the benefit to players of attending the trials.

Blowing the Muth Off

Mapledene A have stormed into an early lead in the top division of the Burnham & District Table Tennis League and this is largely down to the form of Steve Muth – only recently awarded the moniker of ‘The Muthinator’ – who destroyed allcomers this week in the Mapledene derby to maintain his 100% record for the season.  Muth was ably supported by Gary and Daniel Young in the 8-2 win, with each notching a brace of wins on their welcome return to the Burnham League.  David Jacobs’ straight sets victory over Daniel Young being the pick of the Mapledene B points.  Maldon A breathed some life into their campaign with a decent 7-3 win over Cold Norton C.  For Maldon Derek Balding was the star turn winning all his matches on the night including the doubles and only dropping a single set along the way. In the other Derby, honours were more evenly spread as Cold Norton’s A and B sides took to the Latchingdon battlefield to see out a 5-5 draw.  Star of this show was Ian Wall with 3 singles wins all in 4 sets, including a notable victory over Finals Night perennial Kevin Read.

There is an early two horse race in Division 2 as both Maldon B and Woodham C have hit the ground running both taking 19 points out of a possible 20.  It looks like these two thoroughbreds will be neck and neck all the way to the winning post.  Maldon B ran out 10-0 winners against Cold Norton D with Cold Norton’s Dave Hancox putting up the most resistance with two 5-set defeats.  But hat-tricks all round for the Maldon trio of Colin Napper, Hamish Innes & Ciaran Whelan.  So as not to be outdone Woodham C matched that scoreline against 2 man Stow B with welcome returnee Graham Briggs getting player of the match for his undefeated evening.  Woodham D kicked off their season with an impressive 7-3 win over Maldon D as League Chairman Alan Dadswell showed his form with a hat-trick, and young Alex Wilson proved his worth with 2 wins as he moves up to this higher division.  The remaining matches were all tight affairs as Blackwater A and Mapledene C, and Stow D and Stow C locked horns in 5-all draws with no player dominant in either match.  The most notable victory was Jean Chasmer’s 5 set marathon against Tim Pulham, although Pulham hadn’t helped himself with two previous 5 setters in the first half of proceedings.  In the final match Maldon C’s talisman Steve Aspland was back to his best knocking out his first hat-trick of the season in his teams tight 6-4 victory over Blackwater B.  As is often the case the victory came down to the doubles dance and the Maldon duo of Aspland and Colin Barrell are masters of this discipline and rattled out a very comfortable bonus point win to secure the victory.

Not surprisingly it is St Lawrence A that have taken the early headlines and lead in Division 3. Another 8-2 victory this week, and another hat-trick for Steve King, against the plucky Blackwater C.  Ron Tam was on dynamic form for his Blackwater E side as he took a trio of wins in the 6-4 encounter with Woodham E.  The final match of the week saw the much anticipated Maldon Derby as F took on E in the bragging rights play-off.  It was a tight affair throughout as alternate blows were traded.  It was all square at the break and as the teams entered the final singles Jude Mayet of the E team evened the match at 4-4.  The final two matches were both rollercoaster epics, both going to 5 sets.  John Leavett squeezed passed James Raymond for his hat-trick, and in the final showdown the wily Roger Warren came from behind to edge out Ross Wheeler 11-9 in the deciding set to secure the 6-4 victory for Maldon F.

Clacton League Preview

Clacton & District Table Tennis
League

WEB REPORT From : Tony Oswick
26th September 2023
CAN ANYONE STOP THE PANTHERS?
That’s the question that waits to be answered when the new
Clacton and District League season begins next week.
Division One champions for the last ten years, the Panthers retain
the high-class quintet which did them proud last season and,
without an obvious weak link, John Hatley’s team again look the
team to beat.
Windsor Eagles and Nomads Lions, who finished second and third
respectively last season, are also both unchanged and both will no
doubt be challenging hard, but the battle for a top three place could
be too close to call, with three other teams having credible
credentials.
Walton A have added a familiar figure to their regular trio in the
form of former Mens Champion David Binns, a move which may not
improve the team’s average age but which should strengthen their
challenge for minor honours.
Windsor Hawks have boosted their chances by signing talented
young player Daniel Young to their squad, which will give them the
belief they can improve on last season’s fifth position.
There’s no Alan Burgess or Grant Sharpe in the Brotherhood A line-
up but the team welcomes back Gary Young to the League scene
to play alongside Kevin Gowlett, Martin Edwards, Gary Stallwood
and Russell Hillier to form a highly-competitive outfit.
Elsewhere, Walton B are unchanged from the side which recorded a
disappointing set of results last time out, but a team containing
Peter Burrows and Gavin Price should never be underestimated.
Walton C, led by Mark Gale, retain their quartet of hardy fighters,
although they still lack the one top-quality player who will
guarantee points week-in, week-out.

The same might be said of promoted and unchanged Windsor
Buzzards who, with the exception of Dave Martin, lack experience
of top-flight table tennis and, while everyone wishes them well,
they may find it difficult to survive among such exalted company.
It should be a much closer battle at the top of Division Two where
Brotherhood B start as marginal favourites, regulars Barry Allen,
Paul Alden and Mark Salter joined this season by Grant Sharpe to
form a formidable-looking quartet.
Ian Sherwood’s Lawford squad is unchanged and their team is
never far away from the top – they finished third last year and, in
the last eight seasons when they’ve played in the Second Division,
they’ve never finished lower than fourth.
And don’t rule out the chances of last year’s runners-up Walton D
going one better, Paul Woolnough joining Andy Foster and Clive
Allenby for the current campaign.
The new-look Brotherhood D side comprises Kevin Pryor and two
sets of brothers, Sam and Joe Plummer, with Simon Smith-Daye
making a welcome return to League table tennis to play alongside
brother James Smith-Daye. Could they be the season’s surprise
team?
Nomads Jaguars finished mid-table last season but will probably
feel they underperformed, and a team which includes Chris Parr,
Daryl Lott and Chris Petrou will certainly hope to move up the table
this year.
Meanwhile, John Gallagher’s Brotherhood C improves season by
season and their unchanged quartet should be able to maintain a
comfortable position in mid-table.
Nomads Tigers, who were forced to withdraw shortly after the start
of last season, have been completely re-formed, comprising now of
Dave Miller, Colin Webber, Mike Wellum and John Hockley together
with two players new to the League.
Scott Campbell is another welcome returnee to the League scene
and his presence will surely help an otherwise unchanged Windsor
Penguins, last year’s Division Three champions, maintain a much-
needed foothold at this level.
Windsor Kestrels, who struggled in the lower reaches of the Division
last season, are also unchanged, but their route to safety will
largely depend on the form of Graham Bunce and Debra Found,
together with the fitness of Peter Aumord.

In Division Three relegated Windsor Harriers, led once again by
Ferdy Rodriguez and unchanged for a tenth season, start as one of
the two likeliest teams, alongside Duncan Dunne’s Brotherhood E,
who this season have added Tricia Salter to their squad.
Christophe Wilmotte joins the Nomads Leopards’ side which finished
third last season as well as reaching the final of the Knock-Out Cup,
and they will provide stern competition at the top of the Division.
John Plummer’s Windsor Magpies retain their familiar foursome and
neither they, nor Lynette Sparks’ always-affable Walton E, will be
far away from the leaders come the end of the season.
Ruby Gallagher and Lucy Carvell join JJ Barry’s youthful
Brotherhood F team which showed much promise last season, while
Dan Grindrod and Andrey Pavlov are joined by former player Danny
Still and newcomer Gary Simpson in a new-look Brotherhood G.
Nomads Lynx, Nomads Ocelots and Nomads Bobcats finished in the
bottom three places last year but their personnel has been re-
shuffled from last season’s squads, with a number of new players
also added. However, they are all led by the same team captains,
all well-respected local table tennis names – the Ocelots by Sue
Lee, the Lynx by Dave Wright and the Bobcats by Doug Green.
So, on the eve of the new season, we wish good luck to all players
but, win or lose – enjoy your table tennis.

Matt’s still pulling all the strings!

Hockley TTC 2023 Annual Championships – Saturday 23rd September

With the inaugural Ladies Final already completed and Alwine Jarvis incorporated as champion the remaining five finals took place bright and early on Saturday morning. Matt Stringer was featuring in two finals and looking to become our Singles Champion for a fourth time.

First up was the doubles final between Gary Beck and Ollie George against Graham Gregory and perennial winner Matt Stringer. Gary, Ollie and Matt all had a second final to look forward to after this. With Matt’s record in these championships he and Graham would probably have been considered to have been the slight favourites for this match but in a tight first set it was Graham and Ollie who edged it 12/10. Another close set followed but this time it was the turn of Matt and Graham to level the scores with another 12/10 scoreline. It was apparent at this stage that the serves of Ollie and Matt were proving more effective against Gary and Graham respectively and this was repeated in sets three and four as first Gary and Ollie romped home 11/4 before Graham and Matt edged the fourth set 11/9. All down to the final set then and there was nothing in it all the way to 9-9 before Gary and Ollie took the honours. A good, close, exciting match to start the finals.

Gary Beck & Ollie George beat Graham Gregory & Matt Stringer

12/10 10/12 11/4 9/11 11/9

Next up was the Junior Plate which saw last year’s Junior Champion Kris Chankov take on Perry Lazell, who has only been with the club for a few months. After the first set which went easily to Kris 11/5 this turned into quite a battle and quite a contrast in styles. Kris looking to attack and bring his strong backhand into play whilst Perry, really keen to attack with his forehand, but also displaying some strong defensive qualities returning the ball from well behind the table at times to keep himself in the rally. Kris took the second set just, 12/10, but all credit to Perry who eventually got himself back in the match winning a marathon  third set 18/16. The fourth set was just as close and just when it looked a fifth set was inevitable Kris took the match 12/10.

Kris Chankov beat Perry Lazell

11/5 12/10 16/18 12/10

The Junior final could well have been billed as David v Goliath as young William Evesham stepped up to take on the, by comparison, very experienced Ollie George, a league player for some time now despite his own young age. Unfortunately for William he couldn’t find his own version of David’s sling shot to damage Ollie and went down in straight sets 11/6, 11/2, 11/6. Nevertheless William did enough to suggest that he can be as successful as Ollie has become displaying good movement around the table, good serves, and good attacking shots. One to watch for the future.

Ollie George beat William Evesham

11/6 11/2 11/6

The Singles Plate between Gary Beck and Roger Sherman turned out to be probably the closest and most exciting match of the day. A great contrast again in styles with Roger looking to bring in his big forehand smash at every opportunity whilst Gary was more defensive, resolute even, waiting patiently for an opportunity to attack. This was Gary’s second final, having already won the doubles with Ollie, so not a bad achievement for someone in his first season with the club, and he got off to the best start coming back from behind to edge the first set 15/13. Fortunes swung back and forth over the next two sets with Roger levelling 11/5 only to lose the third set by the same score. Roger managed to up his game again in set four and levelled again 11/7 and if we were looking for a nailbiting fifth set to decide the winner then we certainly got it! In this set Gary brilliantly demonstrated his ability to return Roger’s big attacking shots and although Roger got off to a great start leading 5-1 and then 10-7 the errors began to creep in and Gary drew level 10-10. During this run he managed to produce probably the shot of the day returning one of Roger’s smashes from well behind the right hand side of the table, looping it back high and diagonally, landing it just over the net before bouncing far away from Roger’s right hand side and out of reach to give Gary the point. At this point the excitement still hadn’t finished with match points being gained and lost in quick succession, together with some fortunate nets and edges before Gary scraped home 18/16. A great match and a great way for Gary to win his second final.

Gary Beck beat Roger Sherman

15/13 5/11 11/5 7/11 18/16

This brought us to the main event the Singles final between Matt Stringer and Dan Patynski. Already a three times winner Matt got off to a strong start against Dan who never really got going in this set losing 11/3. The second set was a complete contrast as Dan stormed back to level the match with an 11/6 win. At this stage Matt probably realised he needed to up his game and he did that in the third winning 11/6. The fourth set was close all the way up to 8-8 and just when we were looking forward to a fifth set Matt went 9-8 up, and a fortuitous net and then an edge gave him the match 11/8. Well done to our four times Champion!

Matt Stringer beat Dan Patynski

11/3 6/11 11/6 11/8

All in all  a great Finals day and well done to all those who took part, our volunteer umpires and everyone who came to watch. See you all again next year!

Fambridge are massive!

It was the opening week of the new Winter league season in the Burnham & District Table Tennis League and the teams old and new did not disappoint.  The Fixture Gods had pitted the two top teams from recent years together for an early showdown and boy was it a humdinger.  Supreme Champions Fambridge welcomed their nearest rivals Cold Norton B in the opening salvo in the top division.  Both teams elected to go full-Galactico as 6 of the best from across the County when toe-to-toe and paddle-to-paddle in an encounter that went on into the following morning.  Four of the matches went to a deciding 5th leg, and all of those final matches were extremely close with 2 going to deuce and beyond.  So how on earth did Fambridge come away with an emphatic 8-2 victory – well that’s just what they do.  Fambridge took all 4 of those 5-setters and that’s what sets this awesome Club apart.  Fambridge’s Paul Sayer and Keith Adams both recorded hat-tricks on the night, with Cold Nortons whipper snapper Sam Lowman edging out John Poysden for a notable singles win in an incredibly tight match (-11, 13, 11, 10).  Lowman was on tip top form throughout as he was on the wrong side of those two ‘deuce and beyond’ 5 set defeats.  He did manage to add the doubles point as he and partner Eric Green took a straight sets victory over Poysden and Sayer.

Elsewhere in the top division it was a good week for the lefties as both Mapledene’s Steve Muth and Colin Chatfield ploughed through their opposition in their respective matches, and Dan Piglet for Woodham also notched an opening day trio of wins.  The Muthinator took his hat-trick against Woodham B including a notable win over Sanjay Saptarshi with a display of fierce hitting and electric serves.  Saptarshi himself took his sides only 2 points in the 8-2 win for Mapledene A.  Chatfield’s hat-trick came in Mapledene B’s 6-4 defeat of a strong Maldon A side.  The clean sweep was only secured in the final match as Chatfield and Harrison Hill went into the match both undefeated and even at 13-13 in the deciding leg it was hard to separate these protagonists – such different styles – but in this instance experience triumphed over youth and Chatfield took the honours.  In the final match of the week Woodham A took a 7-3 victory away from Stow A with both Dan Piglet and Lee McHugh recording hat-tricks – Piglet just coming through in 5 sets against the loopy Keith Martin.

Blackwater A surprised everyone in Division 2 with a surprisingly comfortable 7-3 turnover of the usually combative Maldon C trio.  It was wily ol’ Merv Perriman who caused the most trouble as he went unbeaten all evening and only dropping a single set en route.  Perriman’s sidekicks of Alan Scammell and Roger Slade chipped in with a brace of wins apiece – but they couldn’t contain the doubles expertise of Maldon’s Steve Aspland and Colin Barrell who took the consolation doubles point.  It was a welcome return for two former Woodham players as both Graham Briggs and Chris Hancox notched familiar hat-tricks back at their old stomping ground as Woodham C scored an impressive 9-1 victory over a beleaguered Stow D side.  Stow’s Tim Pulham saved the whitewash with a 5 set victory over the tricky David Meah.   Cold Norton D will be looking for a more consistent run of form this year which should see them fighting for a podium finish and they kicked off with a solid 7-3 triumph over Blackwater B with awkward lefty Peter Lucraft doing the damage with a fine hat-trick of wins.  Perennial podium chasers Maldon B fielded a very strong side as they blasted their way through the challenge from Stow C.  The match ended up at 9-1 with Maldon’s Colin Napper and Dawn Baldry going unbeaten in singles and doubles.  Stow’s most difficult player was Peter Chastin and he at least saved the whitewash with a long and hard fought 5 set victory over Hamish Innes (rumours of expedite being called after the first ½ hour cannot yet be verified).  Last year’s champs Mapledene C kicked off their campaign with a comprehensive 8-2 victory over the newly promoted Maldon D.  Lin Roff and Bill Smith went unbeaten for Mapledene, and Maldon’s Marty Englander registered an excellent singles point in a 4 setter with Sue Body.

It was mixed fortunes for the Blackwater teams in Division 3 this week as Blackwater C stormed to the top of the leader board with a stunning 10-0 whitewash – unfortunately against their very own Blackwater E side.  The regular Blackwater C trio of Kath Little, Deb Ginn and Phil West all registering opening day hat-tricks – its like they had been playing all summer!  The match wasn’t without its drama though as Little had to make two amazing comebacks from the ‘dead’.  Against Peter Hughes, Little was 0-2 down and then 6-10 down in the match before she went on a run of 6 winning points to nick the 3rd leg and then take the final two legs for the most unlikely of victories.  Then in her final match Little found herself 0-2 down again against Ron Tam.  As the 3rd leg got underway there was some disturbance in the other match and the leg had to be restarted and this short delay appeared to break Tam’s concentration as fortunes changed and Little took the final 3 legs for her hard-earned hat-trick.  Woodham E fielded 2 debutants and 2 players with a bit more experience as they secured an 8-2 home win over the knowledgeable trio from Maldon F.  Debutants Reece Arundell and Peter Harverson both notched a brace of wins but it was the wily old Chris Crooks that took the plaudits with an impressive hat-trick of wins including a 5 setter against Maldon’s best player John Leavett.  Crooks was joined by Val Board for their Brucie Bonus doubles point against Leavett and Roger Warren.
